Why does your business need a Technology Plan?

Would you build a house without you a blueprint? Would you start a new business without a business plan? Do you bring your car in to the garage for planned maintenance? Why would you spend thousands of dollars on PCs, printers, and other networking equipment without a plan? Technology planning is about making wise choices in how you spend your technology dollars. More importantly, it is about making sure your technology dollars contribute to your business goals.

I can work with you and your organization to identify the current state of technology, a desired state 3 to 5 years down the road, a plan for getting there. I will help you ensure alignment between your technology goals and business goals.

Project Management

Technology projects CAN finish on time and on budget - if they are properly managed. As a project manager, I will help you articulate the goals of the project, develop a communications plan, and identify required resources. I will help you avoid schedule conflicts and scope creep that doom too many technology projects. I am a CompTIA IT Project+ certified professional.

Systems Integration

Systems Integration is about building bridges between islands of information, allowing the information to travel from diverse source to where you need it to be. In today's complicated world, it is nearly impossible to find one single application that meets all of your business needs. Regardless of the size of your company, you probably have multiple related databases or an accounting system that doesn't talk to a work order system or some systems integration issue. I can work with you to document all the relevant information about your existing or new systems and develop solutions to make them play well together. In 2003, I was in the inaugural class of the Master of Science in Systems Integration Management at Persons School of Marlboro College and received the President's Prize for best capstone project.

Process Improvement

Do your business processes take full advantage of the technology available to you? Can your processes be made more efficient? Can you do your job faster? I can work with you to document your current business processes and identify areas where technology (possibly existing technology) can be used to streamline operations resulting in time and cost savings, fewer "dropped balls," and less wasted effort.

Network Design

I have over 10 years experience designing, building, and supporting networks for smaller businesses. In this context, "smaller businesses" means fewer than 500 PCs at multiple locations in different towns down to handful of PCs in one building. In addition to the real-life experience, I also hold networking certifications including Cisco Certified Network Professional™ (CCNP), Cisco Certified Design Associate™ (CCDA), and CompTIA Network+™. I can put that experience and training to use for you in designing a new network from the ground up or to help you accommodate growth of your existing network.

Teaching & Training

I am available for teaching and training assignments on any of the topics listed above as well as user training on most operating systems and applications. In 2002, I earned a training certificate from the University of New Hampshire. Over the last 10 years, I have taught dozens of computer users one-on-one and in small groups. I also taught a graduate level Information Technologies course for Persons School of Marlboro College.
